There are many comparisons between Dr. Kings “I Have a Dream…” speech and the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Racism is an issue in past and present day. What people don’t understand is that words do hurt. Civil Rights Activist Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream for his people. The feeling of freedom. Martin would go through years of pain and racist comments.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Atticus Finch show true courage, when standing up against others to spread their message of equality. For example, Atticus Finch, who is a defense attorney, is disgusted with the way racism has negatively impacted the Maycomb society. Atticus Finch is defending an African-American man named Tom Robinson, after Tom was charged with sexual assaulting a white woman. Atticus then decides to stand up to the racism and open everyone’s eyes through the court case. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was another man who stood up to racism and believed all men are equal. Dr. King stated, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but the content of their characters” (18). Dr. King stands up to the prejudice to gain equal privileges for the African-Americans in society. Both Dr. King’s speech and Atticus’ court speech sound similar in the way they stand up for black individuals.
