“The essence of all religions is one. Only
their approaches are different.”- Mahatma Gandhi.  Religion has numerous faiths which consist of
different belief systems. This is the foundation to shaping the world today and
it is based on practices, explanations for their rituals, spiritual beliefs and
attributes which plays a major role in the lives of men.  As there are many religions which creates a
diverse culture, it is important to understand and respect other people’s faith
especially where society is fighting for world peace, therefore, studying them
out of respect can be helpful to accomplish this. Every single religion is
distinct in its own way which gives its own identity. Despite their differences,
there is a union as they follow similar guidelines, values and morals. Two
largest religions that are widely spread are Christianity and Islam with more
than half of the world’s populations as adherents. There is the debate of
whether both religions are equally the same or not. Some believe that they are
quite similar whereas others argue differently. In order to settle these
disagreements, one can analyze each faith in order to identify the similarities
as well as the differences. They may have identical beliefs, teachings and
values, however, they share varying views on conflict, salvation and sin. This
does not prove that one is superior to the other or one’s ideals is better but
this analysis is a biased representation of the fundamental belief of both

Both are stemmed from a common tradition
and history as they are derived from the Judaism faith and their origins start
in the Middle East. For centuries, conflicts happened between Islam and
Christianity. History tells of crusades where Christians and Muslims fought
wars in the name of their God and to this day, some still exists. The birth of
Christianity was in the eastern Mediterranean during the first century and by
the fourth, it was the leading faith in the Roman Empire. During the Middle
Ages, Christianity was dominant and eventually spread to the western world by
missionaries of the faith. Meanwhile, Islam was developed in the 7th
century after Prophet Muhammad’s death. It then spread across the Atlantic Ocean
and developed in Central Asia.

To make comparisons and contrasts between
the two religions, one should be aware of what it is to be a follower of
Christianity or a follower of Islam in order to diminish any uncertainties and
stereotypes. To be a Christian is about accepting what is done. It is believing
that Jesus died for our sins and was resurrected and that according to the
Bible which is the Word of God, “For God gave His only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John
3:16). On the other hand, Muslims believe that the Qur’an is the Scripture of
God and it is the final authority of any situation (Mohammed 8). Muslims
believe that Muhammad, one of highness is a prophet acting on behalf of God. The
main belief in Islam is based on the Six Pillars of Faith  which is based on the fact there is only one
God, the books and prophets  of God, the
supremacy of God’s will and the Day of Judgment. Additionally, they both
believe in following the commandment of worshipping one and only God and the
golden rule of “Love thy neighbor as thyself” (Mark 12:31). Their origins are
traced back to followers of God like Abraham and Moses as well as similar
scriptures, disciples, revelations and prophesies. However, different theological
opinions exist between the two. Christians believe in the Holy Trinity; God the
Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Meanwhile, Islam’s view is that
there is the one and only God and consenting to any division of this oneness is
a great sin. Muslims do not believe that Jesus is the Son of God but rather a
prophet and he is the Messiah just like Christians.
