SYMBOL: Vergina star
THEME: People will betray their morals and logic to gain power and control over others
CONNECTION: The symbol represents Alexander the great through the Greek and Macedonian ties, it was the symbol of the Argead dynasty, famous mostly by Alexander the Great. The relation to the theme of the novel goes to Alexander the great’s conquest of power. He put proper planning for his empire aside for war, killing, and the conquest of more land. Similarly, the boys on the island in Lord of the Flies were so caught up in the idea of having power and killing that they forgot that the whole idea was to be rescued, and ended up just hurting each other.
TEXTUAL EVIDENCE 1: Jack says, “We can light fire again. You should have been with us, Ralph. We had a smashing time. The twins got knocked over—” (Golding 69)
EXPLANATION: Jack and the rest of the hunters are so enthralled in the idea of hunting and having the power to kill another living thing that they completely abandoned the logic of needing to be rescued and let the fire go out. Because of this the boys missed an opportunity to be rescued when a ship passes by.
TEXTUAL EVIDENCE 2: “Now the painted group felt the otherness of Samneric, felt the power in their own hands. They felled the twins clumsily and excitedly.” (Golding 179)
EXPLANATION: The “savages” turn against their former friends for having control over another human being. They crave the feeling of being the ones who determine the fate of another life; so they discard what they believe is right.
IMPORTANCE: Humans naturally desire command over others. Most times when given the opportunity people develop an insatiable need for more power, which often causes them to go overboard and usually leads to their downfall. Because of this desire for more power, these people will sacrifice the ideas they may have had before. As Alexander the great did this, so did the boys on the island, and so have many others; demonstrating the human yearning for power, a yearning that intrudes upon any other principles one may have.
