Scissors are a product that has been around for thousands of years. They are a cutting instrument with two blades fastened to each other so that the sharp edges rub against each other and allow for the cutting of objects. Scissors are normally made from steel and come in two different types: carbon steel and stainless steel. Carbon steel is often used to create scissors where the blade and the handle form a continuous piece. These scissors are made from mostly iron and about one percent carbon, hence the name carbon steel. This material creates a pair of scissors that is sharp and strong. On the other hand, stainless steel is often used to create scissors where there is a plastic handle and a metal blade. These scissors are made from mostly iron, but also contain about one percent carbon and at least ten percent chromium. This material creates a pair of scissors that is rust-proof and lightweight. An example of a pair of scissors made from stainless steel is shown below. Scissors are a product that is manufactured in large quantities. The first step in the manufacturing process is to create blanks. Blanks are the blades of the scissors before they are sharpened or attached to a handle. The blanks are made by three processes: cold dropping, molding, and drop forging. The metal is then trimmed away to make the blanks the proper size and a hole is drilled through them. The blanks are then hardened by placing them into a heated substance and then transferring them straight to a cool substance. Then, in order to create a uniform hardness, the blanks are heated again and then left to cool at room temperature. Because this rapid heating and cooling causes the blanks to warp, so they are hammered to make them straight again. The edge of the blank is then applied to a sanding strip, where the blade is rubbed against particles and sharpened. Finally, the handles are made. Some of the handles are made along with the blades, so nothing else needs to be done. Handles made of metal are manufactured in the same way as blanks and then welded to the blades.
