Science and nonscience are separated by the evidence and fact that supports the particular idea. Many theories and ideas come from either science or nonscience standpoints. Those with strong factual evidence and observation follow the rules of science. Those without such testimonies or are based on faith or misleading information are considered non-science. The use of fact-based qualitative and quantitative evidence to explain natural phenomenon in the world is science. This discipline helps explain almost everything in the world using repetitive testing and experiments. One such idea that can be used to explain the change of organisms over time is Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. This theory states that organisms adapt to their environment in order to survive and reproduce (Darwin). This theory is used multiple times in “Judgement Day Intelligent Design On Trial”. Unlike the alternative theory of Intelligent Design, Darwin’s theory of evolution has a significant amount of evidence to support its claim. According to Ker Than, a contributor for Live Science, evidence from many fields of such as paleontology, geology, and genetics help support Darwin’s Theory. Since Darwin’s Theory of Evolution has mass amounts of credible and fact-based evidence to prove it’s idea, it does use science to explain the theory. Many cases of evidence were brought forth in the trial surrounding the use of Intelligent Design in textbooks to help prove Darwin’s theory. In “Judgement Day Intelligent Design On Trial”, one such piece of evidence was the discovery of transitional fossils. One main argument against Darwinism was that there was no proof of the transition between fish and land animals. This proof soon came to light with the discovery of the fossils of a transition species called Tiktaalik roseae discovered by Neil Shubin, an American paleontologist. This animal had characteristic similar to those of a fish and land animal. This breakthrough helped bridge the divide between two stages of an evolutionary change and provided irrefutable proof for Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. As stated before, science is something that can be tested, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Any claim that does not follow these rules is considered a non-science. An example of non-science in the world would be the theory of Intelligent Design. This theory explains how organisms came about from an intelligent designer and cannot be scientifically explained with enough evidence to be considered factual. Intelligent Design lacks the evidence and testing needed to help explain the theory. This alternative approach to how organisms have such advanced and unique abilities cannot be explained by a designer picking and choosing what would benefit an organism. In “Judgment Day Intelligent Design On Trial” an example of Intelligent Design was the appearance of the complex motors of flagella in microorganisms. Every piece in the flagella had to come about at the same time for it to be of any use as a means of movement. The counter case that some bacteria/viruses have a similar “motor” structure with some of the parts missing, but instead of being used for motion, the “motor-like” structure has a different use. While the complex version of the flagella is used for locomotion, the simplified version is used to transmit disease. This proves that a very complex configuration can be simplified for a different, but equally as important use. There is no real science behind Intelligent Design. This idea of an “designer” lacks substantial evidence and is just creationism in disguise of a scientific theory.
