Introductory Paragraph
Historical Context
Throughout human history, continuing to this very day, religion has been and is currently used to explain diverse natural phenomena.
For example, the inhabitants of various river valley farming civilizations thousands of years ago often believed that the flooding of rivers was a result of the wills of gods.
However, it was particularly important historically, when knowledge was very limited;
science at the time could only only explain so much due to its various limitations, such as the inability to explore beyond the earth.
Additionally, the capacity of people to think and apply reason was also limited; evidence of possible belief systems predates homo sapiens.
When studying human history, it becomes quite apparent that religion has had a great effect on civilizations and their governmental structures.
Many civilizations of the classical and post classical periods followed the principle of caesaropapism, in which the dominant body (typically a monarch) is the head of both state and religion.
This demonstrates the strong connection between religious and earthly law, as both provide behavioral guidelines.
