Intro: research. The primary resource question of this project

The body of this dissertation helps to clarify to the reader the aims and
objectives to the approaches of the research, such as qualitative and
quantitative research. Furthermore to obtain information from qualitative and quantitative
research 10 lesson plans will be completed, which will take account of what can
be changed in current music lessons, as well as the use of creative movement through
music. For this, it’s important to
test the lesson plans out on a focus group.
It is also important that the discussion starts off with the background and the
purpose of research focus, which will also give the reader an overview to the
research project. Nobody under the age of 18 will be involved in this research.
The primary resource question of this project is “Different ways to approach
teaching and how to keep the student interested”. This topic is normally
expressed through classical music which is further detailed in the literature
review. This can affect music, leading it to be another subject rather than
something we can use for expression and as a result, affecting the approach to
music and practice.  Furthermore; this
research will investigate why the drop-out levels for music students is high. Thus;
sourcing and investigating the different methods for keeping children/
teenagers interested in music lessons, as they develop into adults. As part of the
research investigation for this project, it’s important to carry out confidential
surveys as well as interviewing past music students, along with current music teachers.
Conducting interviews with two music teachers who have obtained years of
experience in teaching will be a key approach to this research project, to
gather information on their ways, approaches and methods to teaching, as well
as how they obtain lesson plans in order to keep lessons fun/ relevant as well
as keeping the student intresteted. To protect the identity of the teachers and
students interviewed, they will be referenced as Teacher X and Y and Student X
and Y throughout the research project. Permission to record the interview will
also be obtained, by candidates filling out a consent form to allow the content
of interview to be used.  The
information gathered from the interviews and surveys will help to create a
lessons plan that will keep students interested, and be a structured lesson which
helps the student understand the concept of music as well as being creative fun
and learn to enjoy music.

review: The basis of the literature review will look at
research already carried out in this field. It will include articles, online journals,
newspaper articles and interviews. It is important for teachers to consider how
to situate the music in individual lessons as well as the curriculum as a whole
(Creativity arts in education, 2009) There are varying opinions when it comes
to artful thinking routines, which will help both the teacher and the students,
while performing skills are a vital factor to the success of a music student (,
2017). Critical thinking skills are also important to the lifelong engagement
for students in the musical arts (The Irish Times, 2017).
The use of creative music helps the student to understand importance of
creative movement while singing/playing an instrument (The Irish Times, 2017).
Creative music stimulates creative and critical thinking through the expression
of music. The Irish Times cites that
many children lose interest in learning music when they reach their teenage
years. Studies show the only way we can keep music lessons interesting is to
make music inspiring (The Irish Times, 2017). It is further cited that in order
to keep teenagers interested it is important to give the student a task of
composing their own music, thus; helping to keep the lessons fun as well as
keeping the student interested in the class
(The Irish Times, 2017) Composer, Bill Whelan, cited that “no amount of
theory can make this real, what can make is letting teenagers go off and play”.
He continued that it is important for students to create a connection with
music and as teachers it’s important to ask the student how they connect with
the music, Nonetheless; discussions about music and personal experience in
lessons may provide students with the understanding of music that is more
relevant to their own lives which can help lead to an increased tolerance and
acceptance of music (The Irish Times, 2017).

The purpose of
methodology is to contribute a self-questioning stance to raise the questions
of methodological pluralism (Composition research, 1992). This can be affected
by the individual contributors representing the data research perspectives in
which is made in to the methodology, which crosscurrents in my field of study. Qualitative
and quantitative research methods will be used throughout this piece of
research. These approaches will help to indentify the project strengths,
weaknesses and how different approaches can complement each other. The use of
qualitative research methodologies are designed to provide the perspective of a
target audience (, 2017). Qualitative methodology in music
studies can include in-depth interviews or focus groups. By using this primary
research method, it’s hoped that new information will be gathered on the topic
of choice by the researcher. This will be achieved by carrying out in-depth
interviews with music teachers, focusing particularly on their approach. Furthermore,
interviews with past music students can also be used, focusing on how they felt
about music lessons. This will be classed as primary research, because the
information is new, and being collected by the researcher of this project.

Several data collection
methods exist in qualitative research, with interviews among the best suited
and most commonly used instruments (Kumar2005, noh 2009). Structured interviews
consist of a series of pre-determined questions that all interviewees answer in
the same order (, 2017) Qualitative research requires
reflection on the part of the researcher, both before and during the research
process as way of providing content and understanding from the target audience.
Qualitative research analyses information conveyed through language and
behaviour in a natural setting (, 2017). The primary mode
of the research project, the use of Qualitative research will be used as a way
to capture expressive information. Quantative research often reduces and
restructures complex problems to limited number as well as looking at different
relationships between highly controlled circumstances (Learning, 2017) Examples
of Quantative research include casual comparative research and survey research.
As part of this research project surveys and questionnaires will be used in
order to collect data, thus; asking the respondents to report experiences,
attitude and opinions. By using this method, the researcher is obtaining new
information that can be analysed for the research project. Direct observation
of the quantitative data which has been gathered for the purposes of this
research will be used. The methods section of a Quantative study should describe
how each objective will be achieved (Kumar2005, noh 2009). Furthermore it is
important to provide enough detail to enable the reader to make informed
assessment of the methods being used to obtain results.
