In North America

In North America, tobacco was one of the first crops grown for money. Tobacco helped fund the American Revolution. By the early 1800’s, many people had already began to use tobacco for personal uses such as chewing it, or smoking it in a pipe. It was not until 1865 that a North Carolinian farmer, Washington Duke would create one of today’s most popular stress relievers. The popularity of smoking did not really gain traction until James Bonsack invented the cigarette- making machine in 1881. Just like in years past, tobacco production and distribution is a multibillion-dollar industry. Tobacco has no medical value and is used purely for personal pleasure. The consumption and sale of various tobacco products should be made illegal because it does not only affect the smoker, but everyone around the smoker and the environment.
As stated earlier, tobacco products have no medicinal purposes. Tobacco companies make money off the addiction one has to different chemicals, one commonly known as nicotine. Cigarettes are made up of thousands of chemicals and over sixty of which can cause cancer. Many of the ingredients in cigarettes are a type of rat poison, a type of paint stripper, a type of toilet cleaner, lighter fluid, and many more. This practice is unacceptable. Purposely distributing products with such harmful chemicals is inhumane. Because of the various chemicals within different tobacco products, withdrawals can be very intense. Symptoms include, headaches, nausea, fatigue, tiredness, and many more. For a season tobacco user, the symptoms of withdrawals can occur within a few hours of their last usage of the product. Those who commercialize various tobacco products should not be tolerated. Cigarettes have been around for decades, and one of the most dangerous habits.
Smoking usually begins in younger years, when individuals cave into peer pressure. The human brain does not fully develop until about twenty-five old. Many teens smoke, and in turn are inhibiting brain growth. Smoking affects brain development negatively, and products that are able to have such an impact should not be available to the public. Affects from smoking include but are not limited to: heart disease, diabetes, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and many more. Many smokers know the health risks that come with smoking, but do not know how badly secondhand smoke can hurt those around them. Those exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to have heart attacks because the chemicals inhaled cause the blood to clot more. The rate of death from smoking complications is very high and should not be ignored.
In conclusion, the production of various tobacco products should be made illegal. Smokers are not only a risk to themselves, but to those around them. It is important to consider the facts against various products. Tobacco costs the government millions of dollars a year because how many people need treatment in hospitals for tobacco related problems. America is no longer dependent on tobacco production as a means to sustain the economy, therefore there is no excuse for the industry to even exist. The sale of tobacco products should be banned for the sake of the environment and the general population.
