If there had to be only one thing admirable about the history of human civilization from ancient times to the postclassical period, it is art. However, the arts convey more than just outward appearances- they are symbolic and represent stories within them. Throughout these eras, many of the cultural identities were cemented through their art and can still be observed today. Cultures like the Egyptians, Assyrians, Chinese, Greeks, Africans, Mayans and many more have used their art to preserve and connect their society throughout their pasts. So much can be determined about a people group by the many mediums they used like literature, sculptures, and carvings that we might have never learned if they had not been created. All throughout the course of history, art has played a tremendous role in shaping cultures’ means of expressing their identities in religion, language, and everyday life that are still used today. Through gathering sources from the class textbook, past cultures can be observed from their wide usage of art and its many uses depending on the culture it was created in.
