Everyone cooking, painting, singing, dancing, gardening, and many more.

Everyone has their own specific kinds of hobbies like cooking, painting, singing, dancing, gardening, and many more. My hobby is fairly simple, I love to read. Reading is such a wonderful hobby that allows the reader to gather and process information pertaining to the book. There’s nothing like relaxing with a good book after a long and tiring day. Personally, I love how any good book can let your imagination run wild. For example, one minute I’m exploring the magical world of Narnia with the Pevensies and then I’m adventuring all across Middle-Earth with the Fellowship. I started reading at a fairly young age to improve my speech impairment. I had a learning disability that affected my speech and reading skills. So, my teacher would assign me books to read that would help improve my speech and reading skills. I would always read the Junie B Jones books, those were my favorite books to read when I was younger. My favorite was Junie B Jones Loves Handsome Warren. As my reading skills slowly began to improve, my choice in books improved as well. Now I’m able to read more complex books, that challenges and educates my vocabulary, spelling, and grammar. Reading has quenched the thirst I have for knowledge.   Studies have shown that reading a book reduces stress and increase relaxation. For example, reading fiction books seems to engage the reader’s mind and imagination. In fact, any activity in which the brain is fully focused on a single task is proven to reduce stress and enhance relaxation. A study was conducted by the University Sussex, the participants showed slower hearts rates, less muscle tension, and reduced stress levels by merely reading a book for six minutes. Dr. David Lewis, the neuroscientist who conducted the study, states: “Is more than merely a distraction but an active engaging of the imagination as the words on the printed page stimulate your creativity and cause you to enter what is essentially an altered state of consciousness.”.  It would seem that reading is just another form of relaxation. (Kaczmarek, 2016.)In conclusion, there are many benefits when it comes to reading. We read to better educate or entertain ourselves with stories or knowledge. Reading helps us connect with the characters in the book or learn more about an event that happened in history. There’s no doubt about that reading is far superior to any hobby. When you’re done reading this essay, make sure you pick up a good book and get to relaxing.
