Euthanasia is the end of a very sick person’s life to get rid of their pain

Euthanasia is the end of a very sick person’s life to get rid of their pain. A person with euthanasia usually has an incurable disease or condition. Euthanasia is divided into two as active euthanasia and passive euthanasia. Active euthanasia is if the patient is constantly suffering from lethal illness and is not in a way of salvation, the physician treats the patient to have a high dose of morphine or potassium chloride and die painlessly and easily. Passive euthanasia is in the event that the patient is in a coma, he/she lives with the devices and machines, and the doctor is given the permission of the patient’s relatives and his/her family to stop the patient’s life. Euthanasia is prohibited in most countries, including our country, but is legal in some parts of Belgium, Colombia, the United States and Canada.

On the one hand, there are doctors in our country who argue that euthanasia should be legal. a questionnaire was conducted to collect data from Turkish oncology doctors and almost half of the oncologists surveyed did not oppose this practice. Forty-two doctors noted that they had withdrawn treatment in patients. Atul Gawande, Surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in his 2014 book, Being Mortal, stated: ”Certainly, suffering at the end of life is sometimes unavoidable and unbearable, and helping people end their misery may be necessary.” In other words, they say that euthanasia can be applied to someone who is taking an angle.

On the other hand, there are many reasons why euthanasia is not legal in our country. The first reason is the majority of Turkey’s population is Muslim and therefore, to end a person’s life and it is a great sin to ask for it to be done. According to Wesley Smith, Senior Fellow at the Discovery Institute’s Center on Human Exceptionalism and legal consultant to the Patients Right Council, says in ”If we legalize assisted suicide, some patients will die instead of ultimately regaining their joy in living.”. For example, young children with cancer. If these children lose their determination to live, unfortunately most of them will lose their lives. Also, this will disrupt the relationship between the patient and the doctor and there will be no confidence.
(Smith, W, 2011)

In conclusion, both articles show good and bad sides of the euthanasia. Both articles discuss whether euthanasia is good for human life. However, Atul Gawande and Turkish oncology doctors say euthanasia must be done in some cases. Our religion, our laws and Wesley Smith say that euthanasia is forbidden, it is a sin, it is not ethical and the patient is badly affected by the doctor relationship.
