Bringing extinct species back to the world as a living creature has always been considered as fiction, but now de-extinction is more than just a dream to many scientists alike.
The thought of de-extinction of a species is not new as a species called Pyrenean ibex “Bucardo”, was revived 3 years after it became extinct in 2000, although victory was short-lived however as the calf died several minutes after it was born due to physical lung defects, it changed the idea of de-extinction of a species from fiction to reality.
Now scientists are going bigger as they’re attempting to revive the ancient beast “Woolly mammoth” which died out 4000 years ago due to the combined factor of human hunting, climate change, and mutational meltdown. Scientists believe that they can produce a hybrid elephant-mammoth embryo within 2 years.
The beast will be revived by using CRISPR-Cas9, CRISPR-Cas9 allows the editing of any genome of a living organism. This allowed the researchers led by Church to modify an Asian Elephant genome and make 45 edits to it which will induce wooly mammoth characteristics such as the long hair, subcutaneous fat and its resistance to cold.
Reviving the woolly mammoth could slow down and even reverse the effects of global warming. It ate birch trees frequently which allows grasses to grow faster creating a grassland habitat, birch forest absorbs more sunlight than grassland. Woolly mammoths also plow through the snow with allows cold air to disperse in the atmosphere.
