Arcadis enforces sustainability by keeping a good
relationship with its stakeholders through various channels, including their
annual shareholder’s meeting, and visits with shareholders to project sites.
This allows them to stay in the loop on business operations as they are in
charge of providing the capital for further growth. In some cases, the
stakeholders may have an active role in setting out the strategic direction of
the company (Hill, 2013). This idea that the company is meeting the needs of
the firm directly through interactions of their stakeholders, employers,
clients, pressure groups, communities without compromising its ability to meet
the needs of future stakeholders is known as corporate sustainability (Dyllick,
Hockerts, 2002).   

 

Furthermore, socially sustainable companies
therefore add value to nearby communities by increasing human capital as well
as furthering the societal capital of the communities. These companies manage
social capital in such a way that the stakeholders can understand its
motivations and can broadly agree with the company’s value system (Dyllick, Hockerts, 2002). Arcadis have demonstrated this
behaviour through sustainable urbanisation while working with the shelter

Sustainable development in business operations

 

Arcadis continues to apply principles of sustainable
development to its operations particularly in the solutions they provide to
their clients (Building, 2011). This acknowledges the challenges of meeting
human needs, while protecting the environment and natural resources for future
generations (Arcadis, 2015). This achievement is supported in the Global
sustainability program by the Global Directors of sustainability which aims to
reduce the environmental impact of business operations via global policies in a
range of activities – transportation, energy, paper usage to selection of
purchased materials and products. Arcadis therefore organises its operations to
limit the need for high energy use– one; via having several offices in various
locations globally, which would reduce transportation when meeting clients and
travelling to and from sites. Two; they provide state-of-the-art passenger and
freight rail, tram or metro to meet the needs of tomorrow, by having comprehensive
strategies for durable and eco-friendly solutions. Arcadis claim that “the
transport systems they deliver, are conducted effectively and in harmony with
the natural environment” thus making them sustainable. Finally; the use of paper
is reduced by enforcing methods to reduce usage such as tracking personal
printing in the office, conducting paperless meetings and setting default on
computers for double sided for bills, applications, licences etc (Arcadis, 2015).
These measures are enforced in hope to reduce their carbon footprint.

In 2010
Arcadis followed a standardised method in reporting carbon footprint data with
the World Resources Institute General Reporting Protocol (GRP). Results from
the report helps track reduction efforts meticulously – subsequently helping
them identify key areas to improve their strategies and perhaps reconsider how
they operate.
